Top 5 worst holiday foods

This week’s top 5 may stir up some emotions, as many people are attached to their holiday foods. But remember, these foods wreak havoc on your body and brain, and in turn your stress levels.

I am not saying you can’t enjoy these foods, but do so in moderation (and not all at once!)

Practice mindful eating and choose wisely.

While there are more than 5 calorie-fat-sugar-etc.- laden foods popular over the holidays, I tried to pick one from different categories.

1. Technically a beverage, a grande Peppermint White Mocha is more of a dessert with 520 calories and a whopping 18 grams of fat!

2. Appetizers in general pack a lot of fat and calories into tiny packages. (think phyllo-wrapped) but what about dips? Spinach dip is a huge favorite and contains 30 calories per tablespoon. This might not seem like much but who has just one tablespoon? An typical individual appetizer portion of 10 chips and 7 tbsp dip will run you about 550 calories, most of which comes from saturated fat.

3. At the holiday dinner table: sweet potato casserole. It’s such a shame to take such a great vegetable but pair with brown sugar, butter and marshmallows. All of a sudden you are consuming 280 calories per ½ cup portion.

4. Hmm what to have for dessert? Pecan Pie a la mode anyone? This sweet end to a meal will add 810 calories with 85 grams coming from fat (that is more fat than you need for an entire day!)

5. How about an after dinner drink to wash down all those calories? For those who enjoy a bit of liqueur, 2 ounces of Baileys over ice or in your coffee will add an additional 200 calories to your day. (5.b) For those who don’t consume alcohol and choose a cup of eggnog instead, you may be surprised to find out your beverage is 350 calories.

Stay tuned next week for the 5 Best Foods to have throughout the holidays.
