Body Composition

At Revive Wellness, we measure body composition with a bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). The machine sends a safe, low-level electrical current through your body. The electrical current travels at different speeds through different body tissues such as muscle and fat which determines an individual’s muscle mass and fat mass.

Body composition is important in nutritional analysis because it allows us to determine specific nutrient needs and goals based on one’s quantity of muscle mass as well as percentage of body fat. Everyone is unique when it comes to how much muscle mass and fat mass we carry; therefore, using standardized mathematical equations to predict energy needs may result in an incorrect estimation. Additionally, certain diseases, as well as a history of chronic dieting, may decrease muscle mass which results in lower daily caloric needs.

Body composition testing allows us as dietitians to fine tune specific nutritional guidelines to help clients better achieve their goals.
