Green Onion Cakes

Makes 4 servings

A much more lean way to enjoy this classic Asian-inspired dish, without compromising flavour.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp. wheat germ
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • ½ cup room-temperature water
  • 2 Tbsp. sesame oil, divided
  • ½ cup green onions, diced
  • 2 Tbsp. cilantro, chopped

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 400 °F.
  2. Combine flour, wheat germ, salt and water in a bowl. Mix well. If there is some flour left on the bottom of the bowl, add water 1 tsp. at a time until fully incorporated.
  3. Knead dough on a floured surface for 3 minutes. Place dough into a large bowl and allow to rest for 1 hour.
  4. After the dough has rested, cut into 4 equal pieces and roll out into circles.
  5. Brush the dough with 1 Tbsp. of the sesame oil between all four pieces. Sprinkle with the green onions and cilantro.
  6. Roll each pieces of dough into a snake, then coil up into a cinnamon bun-shaped roll. Flatten the roll with a rolling pin until ½" thick.
  7. Coat the cakes with the remaining  1 Tbsp. of sesame oil and place in the oven. Bake for 20 minutes.
  8. Serve hot and enjoy!
