Being diagnosed with high cholesterol or high triglycerides, also known as dyslipidemia, can be scary, especially when you’re unsure what it is and how to manage it! In this condition, there is an abnormal amount of fat in the blood, which increases the risk of various health conditions such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
What are Cholesterol and Triglycerides?
There are two main types of cholesterol: LDL-cholesterol, which travels from the liver to other areas in the body, and HDL-cholesterol, which does the opposite. With dyslipidemia, LDL-cholesterol is too high, HDL-cholesterol is too low, or both.
Triglycerides are the body’s way of storing and transporting fat for use in energy production, energy storage, cell structure, hormone production, nutrient absorption, and more! Unfortunately, with dyslipidemia, triglycerides levels are too high in the blood.
