Why Is Protein In Everything Now?

Where to watch or listen to this episode

Protein, Protein… Everywhere?

If you have walked through a grocery store recently, you may have noticed something: protein is suddenly the star of the show. It is on breads, cereals, granola bars, chips, pasta, and even foods that never used to contain it. From “high protein” ice cream to “protein boosted” snacks, it feels like every aisle is promoting foods that promise to fuel your muscles and keep you full.

It is not your imagination. Protein has become a marketing favourite.

Why is protein having such a moment?

Protein has always been an essential nutrient, but over time it has turned into the nutrient that people seem to focus on the most. Many of us are trying to manage busy schedules, reduce overeating, and choose foods that feel more functional. Brands have responded by adding extra protein to products that never needed it and placing big bold “PROTEIN” labels on the front of the package in hopes that shoppers will feel healthier for choosing them.

And it can get confusing.

When everything contains protein, it becomes hard to know what actually matters

Protein itself is important for building muscle, supporting the immune system, healing tissues, and helping you feel satisfied. The issue is the illusion that more protein is always better or that a food becomes automatically healthy simply because protein has been added.

Protein chips are still chips.
Protein cookies are still cookies.
Protein cereal may still be mostly sugar with a little whey sprinkled in.

You deserve to feel confident knowing that not every snack needs to earn its place by being “high protein.”

Real protein still comes from real food

There are plenty of naturally protein rich foods that do not need marketing. Beans, lentils, tofu, tempeh, eggs, Greek yogurt, nuts, seeds, fish, and poultry are all solid and nourishing options. These foods come with fibre, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that a protein fortified snack simply cannot match.

Convenience foods can absolutely have a place in your day. The goal is not to shame them. The goal is to help you feel empowered when you read labels instead of pressured by them.

A gentler way to think about protein

Instead of chasing every new protein snack, try looking at your day as a whole.

  • Do your meals include a source of protein you enjoy?
  • Are you satisfied between meals?
  • Are you eating a variety of foods that make you feel good?
  • Does adding protein support you or is it simply adding noise to your shopping choices?

Protein is important, but simplicity and balance matter too. So does enjoying your food.

You do not need a protein version of everything

It is okay to eat bread that is just bread.
It is okay to enjoy cereal because you like it.
It is okay for snacks to be snacks and not supplements.

Marketers may try to convince you that everything needs to be optimized or fortified. Your body does not need perfection. It needs consistency, nourishment, and kindness.

Sometimes the kindest choice is to ignore the noise on the package and choose the food that feels right for you.
